Faculty Welcome (held annually in August)
The Faculty Welcome is held each August at the beginning of the academic year.  Any faculty hired after the start of the previous academic year, or starting with the beginning of the new academic year, are invited to attend.  Please click here for additional information about this year's event.

All Employee Expo (held annually in October)
The All Employee Expo is open to all employees, but new staff members may find it particularly helpful.  A selection of university and community resources have booths and are available to hand out information or answer any questions about their services.  For more information, and to see a list of the groups participating, click here.

Civil Service

When the hiring unit receives notification that the background check is complete, they instruct the candidate to contact Staff Human Resources to schedule any applicable pre-employment testing, which must be completed before their first day of work, and a Civil Service New Hire Orientation.  This includes current Extra Help, Academic Hourly, and Student employees being hired into permanent Civil Service positions.

Once the candidate has passed pre-employment testing (if applicable), SHR will schedule the candidate for a Civil Service New Hire Orientation. Sessions are in a small group setting.  We recommend new hires attend a session the week before they begin their employment, but they are required to attend no later than their first day of work.

At orientation, the new hire will complete HR Forms in UI New Hire and the I-9, which must be signed on or before their first day of work.  They will be scheduled for three benefits sessions: Benefits Orientation, Insurance Enrollment Assistance, and a SURS Retirement Webinar.  They will have thirty calendar days from their first day of work to enroll in health and dental insurance.

To schedule, the candidate should call SHR at (217) 333-2137. Please make sure the candidate has the following information when they contact SHR:

  • SSN
  • Job Title
  • Department
  • Position #
  • Person Reporting to
  • Start Date
  • Starting Salary
  • 12 month or Flex Year Appt. (if less than 12 month position, must sign flex-year form which can be found in the Civil Service Employee Forms area)
