Faculty

Tenure System Faculty

Tenured/probationary tenure system faculty (assistant professor, associate professor, and professor) positions require a minimum of a doctorate degree or an appropriate terminal degree for the discipline. Faculty members teach, conduct research, and engage in public service.

Specialized Faculty

Non-tenure system positions are modified professorial titles, lecturer, instructor, and teaching/research/clinical associate. Units set the minimum degree and experience requirements; however, these positions require a minimum of a bachelor ’s degree. Some of these positions are subject to the terms of a collective bargaining agreement with the Campus Faculty Association (IFT-AFT, AAUP (CFA)).

Postdoctoral Research Associates are employees involved in research and who have completed their doctorate or terminal degree within the last 10 years. Because Postdoctoral Research Associates are transitional in nature, there is not a required specified search process for appointees, and Postdoctoral Research Associate service should not exceed five (5) years from the date of initial appointment.

Academic Professionals

Academic professionals are staff members whose positions have been exempted from the state university civil service system.

Visiting Academic Professional

Visiting Academic Professionals hold academic professional positions scheduled for a temporary duration and are subject to the terms of a collective bargaining agreement with the Visiting Academic Professionals Association (AAP/IEA/NEA).

Academic Hourly

Academic Hourly employees hold temporary or intermittent academic professional positions and are paid on the basis of service hours provided.

Civil Service, Extra Help

Civil Service

Civil service employees are staff members whose positions are subject to the state universities civil service system classification plan. Civil service positions cover an extensive range of roles from overtime eligible to managerial. A number of civil service classifications are covered by a collective bargaining agreement.

Academic Hourly & Extra Help

Academic Hourly

Academic Hourly employees hold temporary or intermittent academic professional positions and are paid on the basis of service hours provided.

Extra Help

Extra Help employees are appointed to temporary civil service roles to fill intermittent or emergent needs and are paid on the basis of service hours provided.

Graduate Assistants

Graduate assistant positions are reserved for graduate students in good academic standing and are appointed between 25% and 67% FTE in order to qualify for a tuition and fee waiver.

There are four types of graduate assistantships as noted below, teaching assistants and administrative graduate assistants are covered by a collective bargaining agreement with the Graduate Employee Organization (GEO).

Four types of graduate assistantships:

  • Research Assistant (RA): The duties of a Graduate Research Assistant primarily involve applying and mastering research concepts, practices, or methods of scholarship.
  • Teaching Assistant (TA): The duties of a Graduate Teaching Assistant are primarily in support of instruction.
  • Pre-Professional Graduate Assistant (PPGA): PPGAs are appointed to non-TA/non-RA assistantship positions in which they primarily gain experience, practice, or guidance that is significantly connected to their fields of study and career preparation.
  • Graduate Assistant (Administrative): The duties of a Graduate Assistant are primarily in support of administrative functions and include such general functions as providing technical/support services, advising students, etc.
Graduate Hourly

A graduate hourly is a graduate student appointed to a position on an hourly basis for temporary special projects. The student must be registered in the Graduate College for the semesters of the appointment.

Undergraduate Student Employees

There are various types of undergraduate student employment available. This includes: Federal Work Study opportunities and hourly positions. Student employment in The Office of Student Financial Aid administers undergraduate student employment programs.

Other Affiliations

Unpaid

An unpaid appointment indicates a relationship with the university, but has no service requirement. In most cases, these appointments are provided to people outside of the university to reflect an affiliation with the university. Individuals solely holding unpaid appointments receive no monetary payments and are not considered an employee.

Graduate Fellow

A graduate fellow has been awarded. afellowship that provides a monthly living allowance and requires no services in return. The student must be registered to receive a pre-doctoral fellowship appointment. Predoctoral fellowships are coordinated through the Fellowship Office in the Graduate College. Graduate Fellows are not employees.

In some instances there may be an individual who has received a postdoctoral fellowship award. Postdoctoral fellowship appointments are not employee appointments.

Retirees

Employees who have retired and who may be rehired in an academic or civil service capacity in compliance with State of Illinois Return to Work law, Board of Trustee policy, and campus guidelines.

Reemployment

Employees who have retired and who have been rehired in compliance with State of Illinois Return to Work law, Board of Trustee policy, and campus guidelines.

Pay Periods & Pay Dates

Employees at the University of Illinois have either. abi-weekly or monthly pay period, determined by their employment category. Pay dates are driven by the employee’s respective pay period. More information can be found in the “My Pay” section of MY UI info. 

Information for Bi-weekly Paid Employment Categories

All civil service employees, academic hourly, extra help, graduate hourly and undergraduate student employees are paid on a biweekly basis. There are 26 biweekly pay periods and pay dates in a calendar year. Bi-weekly pay periods start on Sunday and run through Saturday of the following week, with pay dates every other Wednesday. The pay for each biweekly pay period occurs approximately 10 days after the pay period end date.

Information for Monthly Paid Employment Categories

All faculty, post-doctoral research associates and academic professionals are paid on a monthly basis. Additionally, academic employees who are appointed on a 9 or 10 month service basis receive their 9(10) month salary over the course of 12 months. Monthly pay periods start on the 16th of the month and run through the 15th of the following month. Pay for each monthly pay period occurs on the 16th of the month for the preceding pay period. If the 16th of the month falls on a weekend or holiday, the pay date is the last work day prior.

  4. Sign in to your account using your NetID and password.

Faculty and Academic Professionals

  3. If you are a Civil Service employee click on “Civil Service Appointment Information. Then click on “Access CS Appointment Info”.
  4. If you are a Faculty or an Academic Professional employee click on “Access Notice of Appointment (NOA).” Then click on “Access CS Appointment Info”.
  5. Sign in to your account using your NetID and password.
  6. Select the NOA you wish to review.
  7. Click on “Continue”.
